A Northern German village on the eve of World War I: The hierarchy among the inhabitants is clearly structured. The most important citizens and dignitaries exert the power, all the others obey their will. The pastor conducts the school choir with rigor and obduracy; the doctor humiliates his housekeeper; the Baron manages a sawmill and exploits its workers. But the deceptive calm is one day disturbed by strange accidents gradually embracing the character of ritual punishments. Who is behind them?
